"I Started a Joke" is a vocal by the Bee Gees from their 1968 album Thought, which was released as a single in December of that twelvemonth. It was not released as a single in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland, where buyers who could not afford the album had to content themselves with a Polydor version by Heath Hampstead. According to Robin Gibb, the melancholic tune of the song was inspired by the sounds on board an aeroplane:

The melody to this ane was heard aboard a British Airways Vickers Viscount about a hundred miles from Essen. It was one of those old iv engine "prop" jobs, that seemed to drone the rider into a sort of hypnotic trance, but with this it was different. The dawdling, afterwards a while, appeared to take the course of a tune, which mysteriously sounded like a church choir. Then information technology was decided! We accosted the pilot, forced him to land in the nearest village and there, in a small pub, we finished the lyrics [with Barry]. Actually, it wasn't a hamlet, it was the city, and information technology wasn't a pub, information technology was a hotel, and we didn't force the pilot to land in a field ... but why ruin a perfectly expert story?[5]

"There was a lot of that in those days" Barry laughed, "At that place was a lot of psychedelia and the thought that if you wrote something, fifty-fifty if it sounded ridiculous, somebody would detect the pregnant for it, and that was the truth".[6]

Construction and release [edit]

The song was originally recorded in the fundamental of G major and has ii contrasting sections. The verse sections consist of a bicycle of G Bm C and D chords. The chords for the bridge section are Em Bm C 1000 Bm Em Am D.

The promotional video for "I Started a Joke" was directed by Jean-Christophe Averty. Faith No More originally covered "I Started a Joke" every bit a B-side for their 1995 single "Excavation the Grave". "I Started a Joke" was parodied by a Radio Gratuitous Vestibule sketch in which a voiced-over commentary takes the lyrics completely literally, appeared on the picture Zoolander as covered by The Wallflowers. The vocal "I Started a Joke" was featured heavily in the ending of the film Penn & Teller Go Killed,[29] which features the 2 magicians playing a succession of increasingly elaborate applied jokes on each other with a fatal conclusion. "I Started a Joke" was recited in The Fighter, when Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale) sings information technology in an attempt to console his female parent Alice (Melissa Leo) following an try by him to hide his crack addiction.
